You care about your pets, after all they aren’t just pets, they’re family.
But as a plant Momma, fur-baby Momma, and Momma to my favorite people in the world (they happen to be my children), I think there is a place to have plants in your life that may not be 100% safe.
Much like we childproof our house when our children are small, we can do similar things to ensure that are houses and plants are fur- baby proof.
Aloe Plants
I have an aloe plant that I love, was given to me by my mother, who received it from her mother…it’s been around the block… and everyday I look at it and am proud of myself for not only keeping it alive, but seeing it thrive.
I finally found the perfect place for it, the perfect watering regiment, and I’m proud of it. But aloe plants are usually toxic to pets. So how can I ethically keep this plant while having my fur babies around?
Much like everyday life. There are things we do that we may think are perfectly ethical, but others don’t see them that way. But I take pride in the fact that I take steps to ensure my fur babies are safe.
Here are some things I do to keep them safe from plants that might not be safe for them.
- Keep them high on a shelf.
- Make them boring to fur babies.
- When you water the plants make sure there is not water dripping down that might attract fur babies.
- Put them above plants that are safe for pets.
- Sprinkle cayenne powder on the plants.
- Make sure your fur babies have other options to satisfy their curiosity.

- Interactive and fun, this treat dispenser will teach them new tricks! https://amzn.to/3RWuB5d
- Cat grass gives them that safe greenery to chew on! https://amzn.to/4xajzJH
These ideas are obviously not foolproof, but I have two two cats with very different personalities, and so far neither of them have gone past smelling the aloe plant.
Happy safe-pet gardening!
